Mumbai History

Bombay - Political capital of Maharastra, and commercial capital of India, Mumbai is many cities in one. As the world's largest textile market, a major industrial centre and the country's busiest port handling over 40% of Indian maritime trade. Bombay has no recorded ancient past. From time to time there were only scattered settlements on the island till the Portuguese presented Mumbai as a part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza, bride of Charles II in 1661. Over the next 150 Years, the seven original islands were gradually joined together. The city received a tremendous impetus with the commissioning of India's first railway in 1854

Bombay's colonial legacy is the Gateway of India built to commemorate the Royal visit of George V and Queen Mary in 1911. The Taj Mahal hotel opposite the Gateway was built in 1903 by Jamashedji N. Tata, founder of a prestigious industrial house, to counter a ban on Indian entering the then famous Watson's hostelry. The Prince of Wales Museum commemorates George V's first visit to India in 1905, houses collection of Indian sculpture, miniature painting and Nepalese and Tibetian art

CLIMATE
Being on the coast of Arabian Sea, climate of Mumbai is very much influenced by the sea. The climate is very moderate with summers being hot and winters not so cold. There is rainfall through out the year. Some times rains are very unexpected and they may leave you wet on a sunny day. Temperature Summer (average) 22°C-39°C; Winter 12°C-34°C.

GETTING THERE
Mumbai is a metropolitan city important for not only India but for the whole world. It is accessible by various means of transport. The Santacruz and Sahar Airports are two airstrips serving Mumbai. Almost all domestic and international Airlines have their services to the city. Mumbai can be reached from practically any where in the world by Air. In railways, Mumbai is an important railhead linked by the central and the western rail lines. The six stations of Mumbai are the terminating and the starting point of many trains from the metropolitan.National highway numbers 3,4, 6,8, 9 and 17 radiate from the city providing links to any part of the nation.

POPULATION
Mumbai is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. About 16 million people reside in Mumbai.
